how to tell the living from the dead

The living eat ginger cookies
listen to Dave Brubeck
and admire the fawn-like
litheness and perfect bone
structure of the young
Jill Henessey.

The dead are angry and impatient
to dig graves.

The living admire cedar trees
by northern California beaches
and watch turquoise waves
break on stony shorelines
as a black haired girl emerges
from the surf.

The dead have pressing reasons
and life insurance policies.

The living have happy accidents
and cling to tiny moments
of epiphany and happenstance
and kindness and insouciance
and like to pull things to pieces to
see how they work.

The dead think everything has a purpose
and is subject to reason.
